Het overweldigende natuurschoon van het oosten van Madeira staat in de schijnwerpers op deze dagtocht. Je loopt met je hoofd in de wolken bij Pico do Arieiro, wandelt langs de schattige rieten huizen in Santana, luncht in Quinta do Furão. En stapt terug in de tijd bij Ponta de São Lourenço. Joana, een van onze deskundige lokale gidsen, zegt: "De lunchplek is echt uniek, bovenop de kliffen met uitzicht op de grillige kust van Noord-Madeira. Neem de tijd om door de tuinen en wijngaarden van deze bijzondere plek te wandelen.”

Je wordt eerst boven de wolken naar het torenhoge uitzichtpunt van de Pico do Arieiro gebracht - en je kijkt je ogen uit vanaf 1810 meter boven de zeespiegel. Vervolgens ga je naar het bergdorp Santana. In dit pareltje vind je de karakteristieke huizen met daken van stro die op heel Madeira beroemd zijn. Deze schattige en kleurrijke huizen hebben de vorm van een driehoek en lijken zo uit een sprookje te komen. Na de lunch in Santana gaan we weer verder naar het volgende avontuur.

In Porto da Cruz bezoek je een traditionele suikerrietverwerkingsfabriek die sinds jaar en dag erg belangrijk is voor de economie van Madeira. Joana zegt: "Een van de meest voorkomende gewassen op het eiland is suikerriet. En de verwerkingsfabriek is nog steeds volop in bedrijf en produceert als sinds 1927 voornamelijk rum en honingmelasse. Tijdens ons bezoek krijg je de kans om wat rum te proeven.” De laatste stop van deze dagtocht is Ponta de São Lourenço, een van de meest ongerepte plekken van Madeira, op het oostelijke puntje van het eiland.

Great day even though the weather was very changeable.Our guide Carla was exceptional & held a vast knowledge of this beautiful island & its history & culture. The driver Marcelino was friendly,careful & a superb driver threading our minibus through trafic with ease. Although my wife & I do not usually like bus travel we felt safe & comfortable throughout the day. The sights were amazing & the meal was superb. Even though the mist spoiled our view from the mountain we will be back to do it again

The tour guide was so knowledgeable, made the experience so enjoyable. We were well looked after, especially with our dietary needs as I have coeliac disease and eating out is worrying but special care was taken. Would highly recommend this trip to explore beautiful Madeira

Tour guide was very knowledgeable on Madeira. The weather was against us but that was no one fault. Santana and Rum Factory was disappointing. No follow up on these items little time there and basically a shopping trip. Could be a good trip if more effort put into it.

Nat Geo Day Tour: Local Farm Experience on Madeira’s Terraced Hills

Drive through Funchal's bustling town and Madeira's magnificent rolling hills towards Quinta Pedagogica da Camacha, a small farm committed to sustainable agriculture. Madeira's magnificent scenery takes centre stage on this full day tour. You'll visit a selection of highlights including Cabo Girao Cliff and it's glass-floored platform, Porto Moniz and Paúl da Serra. Mariana, one of our expert local guides, says "you'll get to know the true drama of Madeira's landscapes. You might be lucky enough to see the ocean both to the north and the south, but the highest points on the island do sometimes catch the clouds."Your first destination will be the Cabao Girao Cliff, where you can step out onto its glass-floored platform that stretches out over the edge. The coastal views here are some of the best around, so don't forget your camera. Mariana adds, "the cliff is around 580 metres high, making it one of the tallest in Europe. The views from the skywalk are really something else, and its experience that'll stick with you." Then, you'll head to the coastal town of Riberia Brava, before a stroll through a banana plantation in Madalena do Mar.Next, we'll head up the 1,500m-high Paúl da Serra plateau before descending on Porto Moniz, famous for its natural lava rock swimming pools. A typical lunch freshly prepared with local produce awaits in the village. Make memories with an experience that the world will thank you for."During the months of October to April, your first stop is at Funchal Ecological Park, where a sustainable activity will take place, contributing to the conservation of the endemic flora of the Island. Next, you'll visit the village of Machico for a look around. When the island was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese explorers, this is where they first landed.Heading off-road towards the north, you'll zigzag through an ancient laurel forest – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 – on scenic trails towards the mountain town of Santana to see its steep-roofed, straw-thatched homes. After a well-deserved lunch break in a typical local restaurant, you'll round off with a pit stop at a nearby viewpoint, offering knockout coastal panoramas all the way to Madeira's easternmost point, the São Lourenço peninsula. Chef Sérgio will show you how to make the classic grilled beef skewer, known in Portuguese as ‘espetada', while you enjoy a glass of Madeira Wine as an apéritif. There's also a vegan burger option. To wrap up your tour, we'll visit São Vicente to meet an organic honey producer. Here, you'll learn all about honey production, and you'll try your hand at making Madeira's traditional drink, poncha.
