Karnevalen i Venedig är en av världens mest uppskattade maskerader och en av dem med äldsta anor, som går tillbaka till medeltiden. Förutom att vara ett evenemang med tradition från "Serenissima", lockar den moderna karnevalen varje år ett stort antal turister, som tävlar om att köpa biljetter för att se föreställningarna på Stora teatern på Piazza San Marco. Runt torget hålls stora historiska och konstnärliga exklusiva evenemang, där elegans och stil smälter samman i överskridandet.
Ett av de mest efterlängtade evenemangen är definitivt den berömda änglaflygningen, som äger rum vid tolvslaget på den första söndagen av firandet och som utgör den officiella starten på karnevalen: en hemlig gäst tar modigt höjd från klocktornet och kastar konfetti och andra små gåvor över publiken. Andra viktiga händelser är Dogens historiska parad, ankomsten av processionen för Mariefesten och Serenissimas dans.
