Att göra – Herculaneum
Herculaneum är en stad med utsikt över Neapelbukten, känd över hela världen för de arkeologiska utgrävningarna i den antika romerska staden.
Legenden säger att staden grundades omkring 600 f.Kr. av Hercules och så småningom blev ett viktigt handelscentrum på grund av sitt utmärkta läge nära Viken. Invånarna i staden dyrkade Hercules som också grundaren av den närliggande Vesuvius.
År 79 e.Kr. utbröt Vesuvius och förstörde staden, vilket begravde Herculaneum under cirka 50-60 meter vulkanisk lera och aska. Det var inte förrän i början av 1700-talet som staden upptäcktes av en brunnsgrävare. Till en början trodde man att Hercules och alla ansågs ha rymt från staden före katastrofen, innan man upptäckte 300 skelett under utgrävningarna.
Vägen till de arkeologiska utgrävningarna upp till Torre del Greco kallas Gyllene milen på grund av de fantastiska villorna som byggdes bredvid den på 1700-talet.
Många turister från hela världen kommer för att besöka ruinerna av Herculaneum, liksom den närliggande staden Pompeji som också förstördes av samma utbrott av Vesuvius. När du går in i ruinerna kan du se de många fina husen i Herculaneum som består av påkostade färgade mosaiker, väggmålningar och marmorbeklädnad.
Utgrävningarna har inkluderats i listan över UNESCOs världsarv.
