Som en segelrutt sedan förhistorisk tid är floden Rhen både en skiljande naturlig gräns och även en kommersiell länk mellan olika delar av Europa: Alperna, de mellersta Europeiska kullarna och låglandet på Atlanten. Det är mittsektionen med vild natur längs dess många krökningar, och Ruhrgebiet, med många stora tyska städer kända för dess katedraler, arkitektur och UNESCO världsarv. Den nedre delen i Holland är känt för väderkvarnar och tulpaner. Deltat, besökt för dess naturliga skönhet och poldrar, ett återvunnet land från havet.
