Att göra – Giant’s Causeway
The Giant's Causeway ligger i County Antrim, på Nordirlands nordkust, cirka 5 km nordost om staden Bushmills. En av de mest populära turistmålen i Nordirland, den förklarades som ett UNESCO-världsarv 1986 och anses vara en av Storbritanniens största naturliga underverk.
Med de kraschande vågorna i det vilda Nordatlanten och den slående klippiga kustlinjen, är Giant's Causeway en unik och fascinerande plats att se. Området består av cirka 40 000 basaltkolonner, bildade som ett direkt resultat av ett vulkanutbrott för över 60 miljoner år sedan. Kolonnernas toppar är mestadels sexkantiga i form och bildar stegstenar som leder från klippkanten och ner till havet där de försvinner under vattenytan. De högsta kolumnerna är cirka 12 meter höga och den stelnade lavan är cirka 30 meter tjock på vissa ställen.
Enligt folklore är kolonnerna som står idag resterna av en gångväg byggd av en irländsk jätte vid namn Fionn Mac Cumhaill efter att han utmanats till ett slagsmål av en skotsk jätte vid namn Benandonner. Det finns flera versioner av myten kring orsaken till gångvägen, så boka en rundtur och upptäck hur Giant's Causeway fick sitt namn! Detta unika landskap är tillgängligt på en dagsutflykt från Belfast eller Dublin och är ett måste för alla som besöker Emerald Isle.
